Steering Enters a New Era
The steering system has always been one of the most safe-
ty-critical components in a vehicle. For decades, mechanical
linkages defined both design and driving experience. With
steer-by-wire, this changes fundamentally: the physical con-
nection between steering wheel and road wheels disappears.
Instead, steering is executed by electronic signals, sensors,
and actuators – with software ensuring a safe and reliable
response. This shift creates freedom in vehicle packaging,
improves crash safety, and enables completely new function-
alities in ADAS/AD. Demand for steer-by-wire solutions is rising
worldwide. Some markets are moving faster than others, but
the direction is clear: the technology is moving toward series
production.
Benefits and Challenges
The advantages of steer-by-wire are compelling. Steering feel
and steering ratio can be varied electronically, giving engineers
and drivers more flexibility than ever before. Vehicle handling
can be adapted to different driving modes, from city maneu-
verability to high-speed stability. The absence of a steering
