Hybrids and Range Extenders

More Than Just

Bridging Technologies?

Hybrid powertrains will remain a cornerstone of global mobility

far longer than expected. From dedicated hybrid engines and

transmissions to range extenders, their diversity provides flexibility,

efficiency, and resilience. AVL delivers the technologies, methods,

and virtual tools to define and realize the best solutions.

Market Outlook: Hybrids Stay Longer

“The reports of my death are greatly exaggerated.” Mark

Twain’s famous line could just as well describe hybrid pow-

ertrains. Long seen as a temporary bridge on the path to

full electrification, they are proving to be more durable than

anticipated. Global production forecasts show that the market

share of battery electric vehicles, once projected at over 60 %

by 2035, is now closer to 40 %. This confirms that ICE-based

solutions, especially in hybrid form, will continue to play a

central role in the energy transition.

Regional differences underline this: Europe is pushing a strong

BEV focus, China is combining electrification with a high share

of plug-in hybrids and range extenders, and North America

is following a more balanced path. Hybrids are therefore not

just a bridging technology but a vital part of mobility strate-

gies worldwide. Recent statements from leading European

OEMs and Tier 1 suppliers calling for a more technology-open

approach from Brussels reflect this reality.
