Coupling with the

Driving Simulator

In addition to full race cars, the TB503 is also ideal for testing

certain components, such as the transmission or brakes.

Typically, the availability of a race car is dictated by tight

schedules – by the races, testing on the racetrack, and the

corresponding maintenance in between. The availability of

spare parts is another consideration. Therefore, it may be

easier to put only certain components or modules on the

testbed rather than the full car.

The TB503 is equipped with all the necessary components to

control, for example, transmission oil temperatures through

heat exchangers, or brake disk temperatures through dynamic

blowers. This allows excellent precision and repeatability of

measurements even within a very small timeframe.

Running the full race car on the testbed offers great potential

for technical development and validation. However, it is

important not to neglect the human aspect in motorsport: Split

seconds make all the difference on the racetrack – and they

can only be achieved through optimum interaction between

racecar and driver. Different drivers have different driving

styles and preferences when it comes to car setup, so those

need to be accounted for when optimizing the overall package.

To achieve this, at AVL RACETECH we can connect the real

car on the testbed with the driving simulator: The real driver

sits in the DiL simulator and drives this car on the testbed.

Without this pairing the simulation may show a certain

solution as optimal but the driver cannot make optimum use

of it because, for example, he has a different driving style or a

different preference for vehicle handling.
