AVL Focus - Issue 2024

When Austria became an official Euro NCAP member, ALP.Lab, with

its proving ground partner DSD, initiated “Safety Labs Austria” – the

Austrian Euro NCAP laboratory. ALP.Lab was officially accredited in

2023 and since then has been the exclusive test facility for performing

Euro NCAP Active Safety Tests in Austria.

o achieve accreditation, 352 driving tests had to be

successfully completed, both day and night. In addition

to an optimized test track, a simulation-to-proving-ground

toolchain, innovative road marking robots, and new ways to

minimi^e downtimes dYe to tecLnical JailYres, tLe final Tiece oJ

the puzzle was the “AVL Smart ADAS Analyzer™” – NCAP test

software for live test analysis and documentation providing

results in a matter of seconds directly on the test track.

Validation and testing of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems

(ADAS) and Autonomous Driving (AD) systems is a complex

and extensive process. Ensuring the safety of these systems

requires a combination of real-world and virtual testing

metLods. 'Yrrently, a significant Tortion oJ %(%7 validation is

conducted on proving grounds, where controlled environments

allow various scenarios and conditions to be tested. However,

this approach presents several challenges. One major challenge

is the sheer number of scenarios that need to be tested to

ensure comprehensive coverage, which is time-consuming and

costly. Regulatory testing also adds another layer of complexity,

as different regions have varying standards and requirements

that must be met. Understanding and mapping regulatory

testing reUYirements to sTecific test Tarameters reUYires deeT

understanding of test procedures and protocol descriptions.

In addition, errors in testing often go undetected, leading to

invalid test series, which generate high costs for additional test

planning, preparation, and test track allocation.

The AVL Smart ADAS Analyzer™ (ASAA) solves the challenges

and comes witL varioYs Tredefined test evalYation catalogs,

such as NCAP and highway assist for EU, China, Japan, UNE

152, 151, and 159. A full set of validation limits, safety ratings,

and various reporting formats are available with the catalogs.

The seamless interface to the proving ground test equipment

allows go/no-go decisions directly on the proving ground

during test execution. NCAP-compliant test reports in ISO-MME

format are available with a single mouse click, which saves a

considerable amount of time compared to manual preparation

of test reports.

For the proving ground test customers, this means more

eƾciency dYe to less idle time and more LigLUYality tests Ter

day.

“Using the ASAA significantly

increases our efficiency. It enables us

to perform a complete test evaluation

in real-time on the test track.”
